Here are some pointers that may prevent you from losing your website.
Get a contact for design with signatures.
Be sure you are the Registrant/ Administrative Contacts on “Whois”
Do not give final payment until you have a copy of the files on C/D in your hand of your website!
If you have a web designer from Seattle / Federal Way you are screwed, as they have skipped town. I have tried for 5 yrs. to do this only to get hung up on, blocked emails etc. I no longer have the domain name and am paying for hosting of a site that is not there. So heed warning!!!!
Contact your local S.C.O.R.E for any free legal advise. www.score.org/explore_score.html They are local retired business men who help small businesses. They are great! And free!

P.S.
Per the Score professional, the web designer needs to be reported to the police as he has committed a felon. No wonder he vanished!
